Culture

A street in Annapolis, Maryland
Maryland’s business-friendly climate, low unemployment, world-class universities, and proximity to Washington, D.C. have created a magnet for research & development. Maryland is home to the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, the Goddard Space Flight Center, the United States Census Bureau, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Celera Genomics company, Human Genome Sciences (HGS), and hundreds of other technology, biotech, and research think tanks. As a result, the state has attracted the greatest minds from across the globe, creating a diverse blend of international cultures, and all the benefits that brings.

Maryland has balanced its economic growth with a strong eye toward preservation. Forbes Magazine recently ranked Maryland the fifth greenest state in the country, and despite its growing economy, it ranks 40th in national power consumption. As a result, Maryland has been able to maintain its pristine waterfront, wetlands, and parks, providing some of the countries best sailing, camping, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities.
Weather

While weather can change somewhat depending on elevation and proximity to the ocean, Maryland’s climate is typically fairly seasonal, and typical of the Mid-Atlantic region. Summers are warm, with a statewide July high of 91 in Baltimore. Winters are fairly cold, with an average January nighttime low in the low 20s to 30 degrees, depending on the region of the state. Daytime highs remain well above freezing, so snows are rare and melt quickly.
Real Estate
