Michelle Caswell (nee Malette) was our amazing team member, Amanda’s "big sister" and Caz’s beautiful wife. She started her real estate career in 2008 and was incredible at serving her clients best interests throughout her tenure.
In August of 2020, Michelle had an episode while showing properties that ended up a few days later in the Emerge. A week later, Michelle needed emergency surgery to remove a brain tumour that began hemorrhaging which caused the confusion and instability while she was working. This surgery left her with deficits that required our highly athletic teammate to require the use of a cane to walk and made her left side somewhat uncooperative.
After a couple of weeks, pathology confirmed that Michelle, aka “Mishe”, had Glioblastoma Multiforme, or GBM. This is the same Stage IV brain cancer that also took Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip from us too soon.
Although GBM has an average life expectancy of 15 months from diagnosis, Michelle faced it with determination that she was going to be one of the five percent that lasted five years. Her courage in the face of an incurable disease to face her days with a smile, showering everyone at the Northeast Cancer Centre with positivity and gratitude and telling everyone to treat everyday like Christmas was legendary. She was the absolute epitome of courage and a true warrior.
Unfortunately, as time progressed, it was evident that the disease was taking hold and advancing. She continued to fight with a smile, forever more concerned about how everyone else was doing while laughing and enjoying every moment she could with everyone who walked into the room.
On September 29th, 2021, our warrior lost her battle. Michelle passed peacefully at home surrounded by close friends and family with some birch burning in the woodstove and her favourite playlist playing for her departure. We miss her. We miss her aura. We miss her positivity. We miss her compassion. We miss her competitiveness. We miss her smile. She was simply the greatest gift we ever had in our lives and we’ll be forever grateful.
