Casual Backyard Dinner Menus to Make Cooking at Home More Fun!

(Published on - 7/8/2021 1:07:09 PM)

Even if you’re not a cook, there are a ton of things that can be thrown together with minimal time and effort. There’s no better time to start eating more vegetables and fruits with so many in season to choose from and the time to experiment!

Start Out With Some Grilled Fruit Kabobs

Fresh fruits are packed with antioxidants and a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth. Grilling fruit intensifies the flavors and brings out the fruit’s natural sweetness. Some great options that hold up well on the grill are bananas, pineapples, peaches, and melons. Cut fruits into large pieces to avoid losing any small pieces through the grates on the grill. You’ll know it’s done when the middle of the fruit is hot and it has thick, dark grill marks.

Make Some Homemade Lemonade with a Summery Twist

Watermelon is finally back in season! Try making some watermelon lemonade for a refreshing twist on a summer must-have. It has a perfect balance of sweet and tart that pairs perfectly together. Even better, make an adult version and spike it with a little vodka!

Stuff it!

Avocados are one of the most popular fruits out there and are densely packed with nutrition. Once you remove their large seeds from the middle, it makes a perfect little crater to stuff things in! You can go for a Mexican appetizer and stuff a cold avocado with cubed tomatoes, onions and cilantro, or go a more savory route and create some chicken parmesan stuffed avocados for a heartier meal.

Bring the Caribbean Atmosphere to your Backyard

Even if you can’t escape on a tropical vacation, you can bring tropical flavors right to your backyard. Try making jerk chicken. You probably have most of the spices sitting in your cabinet already. The blend of spices contrasting with the hint of sweetness is irresistible. You can spice it as much or as little as you want! A typical jerk spice rub consists of allspice, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, thyme, garlic, brown sugar, ginger, salt and pepper; and you can adjust the amount of spice to your liking.

California Vibes

Throw together some fish tacos and you’ll feel like you’re a surfer in Cali. Tacos are one of the most diverse dinner ideas out there. You can load up the toppings or keep it simple. Either way, this is a versatile summer dinner to please everyone.

A Grilled Cheese Walks into a Luau…

If you are a fiend for Hawaiian pizza then this is sure to tickle your pickle. Try making a grilled cheese on Hawaiian sweet rolls brushed with some teriyaki sauce and add slices of pineapple. It will satisfy your sweet and salty craving and make you want to bring out your loudest Hawaiian shirt.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

1234867

Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience. An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

This musical has adult themes so please keep that in mind. There are 8 different performances you can see:

Hurricane Prep: PEP Tank Dos and Don'ts

(Published on - 7/7/2021 6:24:22 PM)

Do I have a PEP Tank? Do I really know what a PEP tank is? What does my PEP Tank do? What do I need to do with my PEP tank before a storm? If you're asking yourself any of these questions, you came to the right place!

For starters, a PEP Tank is a Pretreatment effluent pumping system. The PEP System is a part of Palm Coast's central sewage system designed for your particular area. In areas served by the PEP system, each home will have a buried tank, a small pump and a control panel that is mounted on the home. The system is owned and operated by the City of Palm Coast Utility Department. On the control panel, located on the side of house, you will notice a red light and a green light on the side nearest to the road. The green light indicates that the control panel is energized and should always be illuminated. The red light is part of an audio-visual high water alarm. According to Cindi Lane, Palm Coast’s communications and marketing manager, about half of the homes in Palm Coast have PEP tanks.

Why should you be concerned about this during hurricane season? Well, Hurricane Matthew caused problems for PEP tanks in Palm Coast in Oct. 2016. If power outages occur, an average family will only be able to use a normal amount of waste water for three days before PEP tanks start to back up. However, Cindi Lane said the city is working to make sure aftermath problem solving goes faster and smoother this year should we run into problems with power outages and PEP tank problems.

If the power is off, the pump will not operate. Pep tanks will not empty into the wastewater system if there is no power. If the tank fills to capacity, there is a risk it could back up into your home, causing a health concern. If any part of your tank is damaged or missing, you need to call the City department and report the problem. If your PEP tank breaks or is getting backed up, an audible alarm will sound from the control panel. If your pep tank alarm goes off, please call Palm Coast customer service at 386-986-2360. They will be taking calls 24 hours a day starting 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10 through the duration of the storm.

  1. Utility workers can come to your house with a tanker truck and suck out the waste. Then the truck will take the waste to the wastewater plant.
  2. Utility workers can hook a generator up to the PEP panel, which is on the side of your house, and turn the pump on temporarily to move the waste into the sewer pipes.

So now that you know how to handle a PEP tank if you lose power, you're ready for hurricane season!

What to Consider When Moving for Retirement

(Published on - 7/1/2021 1:11:13 PM)

Usually, the only thing you’d think about when moving is location, location, location. However, when you’re moving for retirement, it’s never the same thing – you have to consider several factors because things will never be the same once you retire. For one, you won’t be earning the same money you usually earn from a regular day job. This means that when you retire, you should be keen on your expenses. Healthcare will also become a necessity during this phase of your life. To ensure that your move during retirement will become beneficial to you in the long run, consider these questions:

How much is your monthly budget?

This is probably one of the most important things to consider when you’re planning to move for retirement. For you to have a successful retirement, you should have an idea of how much are you willing to spend on it. You can budget for retirement by looking into your monthly expenses. Determine how much you’re spending for mortgage payments, car payments, and other recurring bills. You should also keep track of how much are you spending on leisure activities such as dining out, groceries and shopping. If you need assistance in doing all of these, you can use a mobile app (there are a handful of apps online) or hire a financial advisor. All of these can help you in your budgeting, especially if you don’t have any idea of how to do it. After considering your expenses, take note of all the possible sources of income every month. Once you have these numbers, it’ll be easy for you to come up with a monthly budget which is suitable for your needs and wants.

Where do you want to retire?

Aside from determining how much you can spend in a month, the location of where you want to retire should come next. Regardless if you’re moving somewhere new or near your current residence, you’ll be able to find a location appropriate for your needs and budget. You can narrow down your search by looking into locations which have recreational activities and volunteer opportunities for seniors. As a retiree, you should always have avenues for physical activities and have fun.

How far is your new location from friends and family?

Consider the proximity to your family and friends. People who retire would want to be near their loved ones so they can easily bond and spend time with them. If you’re currently living in the same town as friends and family, and you want to be near them once you retire, think about retiring in your current city. If not, scout for nearby locations which are within driving distance. You want everything should be accessible to you and to them. On the other side of the coin, if you want to live far from your friends and family (to finally have some time to yourself), move somewhere near an airport. This will make it easier for you to visit your friends and family, and for them to do the same too.

If you’re living far from your friends and family right now and want to move somewhere near them, take time to familiarize the area. You need to make sure that everything you can ever need is within the proximity. Doing this will also help you determine the amount of adjustment you’ll need to have once you move in.

Are there any healthcare facilities nearby?

When you age, your body starts to deteriorate. You’ll not be as energized as you were back when you were a teen. And with these changes, you’ll be needing a good doctor. Before moving, look for an area that has convenient healthcare facilities for you. Does this place have a hospital and credible doctor? Do they supply a wide variety of medications for your needs? Do they offer 24/7 medical assistance? You should have answers to these questions before deciding where to move. All of these are important for you to maintain your health once you retire. Aside from the availability of healthcare facilities, learn how your move can affect your healthcare plan. Usually, the healthcare plan you’ll enjoy will be dependent on where you move.

Are there recreational activities available?

Being physically active is a necessity for you to live a healthy lifestyle during retirement. For this reasons, your location should support recreational activities. It should allow retirees like you to enjoy an afternoon of playing tennis, swimming or hiking; it should not run out of activities for you to do. Some retirees would even choose their retirement destination based on the activities they love to do. Retirees who love outdoor sports may choose a retirement location which is near a beach or mountain. For retirees who have a green thumb, a location which has gardens or lawns are their best options. Think about the things which you can do in a location – these will keep you physically and mentally sharp as you age.

Do you have any existing debt?

The last thing you want to think during retirement is debt. Retirement should be the time for you to relax, and not stress out. This is why you should slowly pay all of your debts before retirement. Shell out money from your monthly income and allocate these for your debts. The earlier you clear your life from debt, the earlier you can start planning for your retirement.

Do you need help during the move?

After deciding where to move, think about “how” you can actually do it. If you’re planning to do everything DIY or with the help of your friends, pack everything ahead of time. Boxes should be labeled accordingly. Consider decluttering before the move so you won’t end up bringing items which you no longer use. You can also have a garage sale and use the money you’ll earn for your moving expenses. If you’re thinking of hiring professionals for the move, scout for moving companies and compare prices ahead of time. Make sure you’ll end up working with a moving company which can give you the service you want within a reasonable price.

Don’t Make Rash Decisions

If you have been working for decades, retirement may not come easy. This is a stage in your life that will require drastic changes. You’ll have to change your daily routines, let go of some relationships and even inject new activities just so you can live a healthier life. Fortunately, all of those changes can be pacified once you move in a location that is perfect for you. Deciding as to where that location is, can be might be a challenge but with the right sources, you’ll know what to do. Consider the tips from this article and you’re already a step closer in retiring to your new home.
